Welcome to Palomino Innovations

As we begin this venture, Brett Smith will tie all flies. It is our hope and plan to eventually expand and involve other local tiers from the Sheridan, Wyo., area. When purchasing Palomino Innovations brand flies, we assure you that there is consistency, quality, and durability in the products you are buying.

We use the best materials and quality hooks.

All of the patterns on our website are sold in minimums of six flies (size & color). This helps to minimize the time required to set up to produce your order. Orders are produced one at a time on a first-come, first-served basis.

Flies are not pre-tied or in stock.

The flies on our website are the same patterns we used yesterday, today, and in fly-fishing days to come.

And why the Palomino name? "I named (the extended-body flies) after a team roping horse I used to own," Smith says. "He always worked and was consistent."

Palomino Flies

The popularity of these flies has ebbed and flowed over the years, but they really never went “out of style.” Why? Because they work, and their effectiveness has been proved countless times across decades by anglers all over the globe. Check back soon for our full line of Palomino flies!

Palominnow Flies

First, they are streamer flies, as they are tied to imitate fry over immature small stages of Rocky Mountain whitefish, trout, bass, carp, suckers, daces, sculpins, and baitfish of the fresh- or saltwater variety. As this website emerges, much more will be written about this style of tying. These baitfish imitators have been extensively field-tested by many fly anglers of varying abilities in both fresh- and saltwater. They are "bona fided."

What is the Palomino/Palominnow style of tying?

What is the Palomino/Palominnow style of tying? The Palomino style of tying incorporates a variety of materials to create extended-body flies, be they midges, caddises, or baitfish imitations. I will be the first to tell you that I did not invent the extended-body fly, as they have been around long before I was even born. What I have done over my career is use a combination of natural and synthetic fly tying materials, along with some materials that are not even considered fly tying materials, in unexpected ways to create unique and effective flies.
